Dare County Applauds Record of Decision on the Bonner Bridge

The long effort to replace the Bonner Bridge took a major step forward December 20 when the Federal Highway Administration signed a Record of Decision. This allows the N.C. Department of Transportation to move ahead with construction of a new bridge over Oregon Inlet.

The Record of Decision followed a press conference by U.S. Senator Kay Hagan announcing that agreement had been reached with the Department of the Interior to endorse replacement of the Bonner Bridge.

Warren Judge, Chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners who participated in the press conference said, “We are extremely pleased. The residents and visitors of the Outer Banks are delighted to receive this news during the Christmas season.” He added, “We can’t begin to thank Senator Hagan enough for assisting our efforts to overcome issues that were raised by the Department of Interior.”

An important step, according to Judge, was a meeting last month when Senator Hagan toured Dare County and viewed the Bonner Bridge by boat with local, state and federal officials. He said, “That meeting with Senator Hagan was instrumental in getting all the parties to sit together and make a commitment.”

In acknowledging the Record of Decision, Judge commended the efforts of Senator Marc Basnight who he explained, “for a long time has consistently been a strong advocate for replacement of the bridge. We thank him for the special role he has served in helping us get to where we are today.”

Judge also thanked several other elected officials. “We are grateful for leadership in Raleigh and Washington, D.C. that has worked tirelessly to help us replace the bridge. He recognized North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue, Rep. Tim Spear, U. S. Senator Richard Burr, and Congressman Walter Jones for their efforts on behalf of the people of Dare County.”

Vice-Chairman Allen Burrus, who represents Hatteras Island said, “This Record of Decision would not have been possible without all the hard work done by the Citizens Action Committee to Replace the Bonner Bridge and the Bridge Moms. Together they mobilized an outpouring of public support from around the nation and proved what can happen when a grassroots effort gets cooperation from federal agencies in working together for the good of the people.”

Moving forward quickly following the Record of Decision, the N.C. Department of Transportation has already scheduled the first permit negotiation meeting for January and has three prescreened design-build teams ready to compete. These represent timesaving measures in clearing the way for construction of the new Bonner Bridge.

Re-Entry For Hatteras Island Begins 7:00am Saturday, September 4

The mandatory evacuation issued for Hatteras Island will remain in effect until 7:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4. NCDOT has been working throughout the day to remove sand and standing water on NC Highway 12 from Hurricane Earl.

With the lifting of the evacuation order for Saturday at 7:00 a.m., access for all vehicles will be restored to the Villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras and the ferry dock.

Motorists are advised that although access will be permitted, there may be standing water on roadways throughout the area. Proceed with caution, as it is difficult to determine the water’s depth and can cause brake failure, loss of control, or vehicle flooding.

At noon today, the mandatory evacuation was lifted for the remainder of Dare County north of Oregon Inlet including the Towns of Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Nags Head, Southern Shores and the unincorporated areas of Dare County north of Oregon Inlet.

The bridges leading to Dare County are open and no re-entry pass is required.

Evacuation Order Still in Effect

The evacuation order for Hatteras Island will not be lifted today. I spoke with Dare County Emergency Management at approximately 3:30 pm and was provided this information. I have not seen a new bulletin on darenc.com verifing this information. However, the last bulletin stated the island was closed so they may not be planning an update.

Again, we will post more information as it becomes available.

The mandatory evacuation order for Hatteras Island remains in effect due to sand and standing water on NC Highway 12. Villages affected by the continuation of this evacuation order include Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. Crews from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are working to clear the roadway. An advisory will be issued when conditions safely allow the evacuation order for Hatteras Island to be lifted.

Earl has passed. This is a picture from our office earlier this morning. The road in front of the office remains flooded at this time.

Dare County and NC DOT have not re-opened Highway 12 on Hatteras Island. Additionally, the evacutation order is still in effect.

The 11am update from the National Hurricane Center has the eye of Earl passing 60 miles east of the Buxton point. We are expecting winds between 55mph - 75mph with gusts to 95mph.

Unfortunately, a mandatory evacuation of all visitors was issued at 8am this morning. This means all guest must leave today as quickly as possible.

If you have a reservation arriving in the next few days..please call the office prior to departing for your vacation.

At this time, it does not appear that Hatteras will receive Hurricane force winds. We will keep you posted.....see you soon.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Cape Hatteras Secondary School Graduating class of 2010. We would like to congratulate our very own Danielle Gartelman on her graduation. She received 3 college scholarships!!! Way to go Danielle. We know she will go on to do great things and we hope she will stay with Colony Realty for years to come.

FISH FRY - SATURDAY

This Egret is looking for a fish dinner in Avon, also known as Kinnakeet. While he is fishing on the Pamlico Sound...we will be eating plenty of fish at the Avon Fire Station on Saturday evening. The Kinnakeet Civic Association is sponsoring a weekly Saturday night fish fry from 5-7pm. After a long drive or a long day at the beach, let someone else catch, clean and prepare your dinner. Hope to see everyone.

If you are staying in Hatteras or Frisco village, you may want to go to the Hatteras fish fry.

Either way...come early and bring lots of friends.

Everyone say goodbye to Blossom. She will no longer be in the office on Saturdays. It is just too exciting for her. However, if you must say HI to her she will be in the office Wednesday through Friday. She is looking forward to her Saturdays basking in the sun on the beach in Hatteras or just enjoying the sights and sounds of the Pamlico Sound from her deck!

It is a BEAUTIFUL day at the beach. Typical Hatteras spring weather...75 or so and the wind is blowing. Fisherman are not so happy and the kite boarders are having a blast.

Spring is here on Hatteras Island. The wind is great for windsurfing, kite boarding and paddle boarding. We have affordable vacation homes available from the ocean front to the sound front. So whether you prefer ocean water sports or sound water sports you will have easy access.

If you prefer fishing on the Outer Banks, the weather has been fantastic for fishing. There have been reports of Red Drum near Hatteras Inlet.
